If you are an apparel/garment printer you need to be aware of a recent Act which I just read about in the May 2009 issue of Printwear magazine.

The article was titled "When Being Green Can Make You See Red" by an Anonymous veteran of the plastisol-ink community. Go here to read for yourself. (It's actually on page 60 but in the page filp program they use its page 66)

If this act passes as is all consumers and garment/apparel  printers will be affected.

I will assume are were interested enough to actually read the article for yourself.

This is an issue which would have a major impact on small to mid-sized print shops with the added costs involved in tagging the production information, testing garments from every run of every color, and printing out and adding information from all the places and materials which were utilized in creating the garment. I feel it would greatly affect the smaller businesses, being they are the ones who mostly print little league and after school sports garments. Also the average quantity of those orders hardly goes over 100 garments. Adding the extra cost to test the garments and production information print will increase the price of each garment, according to the article, from $7 to approx. $32.50. This is way to much to spend for just a youth sized medium shirt with a 1 or 2 color printed design on it.

I wouldn't expect parents to want to pay for a new shirt, if they were that expensive, every time their child changed grades, leagues, sports, or teams. The cost of athletic fees for after school sports has done nothing but go up over the years.

Where I'm from, when I was in high school, it cost $40 for each sport you were in after school. Now seven years later I hear it is up to $75 per sport. I get to talk with a bunch of the middle school and high school sport coaches quite frequently as I often do the artwork for the sports teams. At one point the swimming coach said another school was about ready to drop the swimming program and mentioned the athletic fees for that school's sports were $375 per sport. Then you think about tacking on an extra $35 for a team shirt. That's crazy.

So as a notice to all you garment printers, if you haven't , please read this article and do what you can to help get people involved with modifying or stopping this Act from passing.
